Make a Splash - READ!
Charleston County Public Library's summer reading program is for children ages 11 and younger. Enjoy this FREE program at any of our locations during June and July. Upon registration, children receive a summer reading log to keep track of time read, or time read to. When each level is completed, turn in for fantastic prizes!
5 hours ~ certificate and South Carolina reading medal

15 hours ~ choose a Charleston Battery soccer or Carolina Ice Palace passand a ticket to the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry or a Carolina Karate prize

30 hours ~ T-shirt, entry in the Make a Splash - READ! Grand Prize Drawing and entry in the Community of Readers Home Library Prize Drawing

One award per child, per category, while supplies last.

Make Waves Teen Summer Reading Contest

Students entering grades 6 – 12

This summer, read something - a book, magazine, newspaper, graphic novel, website: ANYTHING! Then, stop by any branch of the Charleston County Public Library. Fill out an entry form and drop it in the prize box or enter online beginning June 1st. You will automatically be entered into that week's prize drawing.

You will win free fries or ice cream from
McDonald's just for entering!

Keep reading and entering!
The more you read, the more chances you have to win.

Weekly Prize Drawings
Winners will receive prizes including: gift cards for iTunes and bookstores, free passes to area attractions like Carolina Ice Palace and Whirlin' Waters and other Charleston County water parks.

Read 800 pages (Don't worry, we'll keep track for you.)
You will win a free Value Meal from McDonald's, a Make Waves T-shirt and entry into the Grand Prize Drawing at your local CCPL branch library.

Grand Prize Drawings (read 800+ pages to qualify)
Each participating CCPL branch library will hold a Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the summer. Prizes vary by location (minimum $50 value).

2010 Adult Summer Reading Program

Official Rules:
Entry forms will be available at any of the Charleston County Public Library branches or online at this web address beginning June 1st. Complete one entry form for a book that you have read. Leave the form at the branch or submit it online to be eligible for the weekly drawing. Multiple forms may be filled out weekly, but only one per book. Weekly drawings will be held on Fridays beginning June 11, with the final drawing on July 30. A grand prize winner will be selected in August. Must be 18 or older to enter. Reading Wave 2008 - Adult Summer Reading Program

Adults, treat yourselves to the Reading Wave, the adult summer reading program. The more you read, the more chances you have of winning our weekly prize drawing. Come in and fill out an entry, pick up some forms, or enter online (remember to put West Ashley as your branch on your online form).

Official Rules:

Entry forms will be available at any of the Charleston County Public Library branches or online at this web address beginning June 1.
Complete an entry form for a book that you have read. Leave the form at the branch or submit it online to be eligible for the weekly drawing. You may fill out multiple forms weekly.
Weekly drawings will be held on Fridays beginning June 13, with the final drawing on August 1. A grand prize winner will be selected in August.
Must be 18 or older to enter.
Contestants need not be present to win.
Employees of the Charleston County Public Library and their families are not eligible.

The Charleston County Public Library's Summer Reading Program is for children ages 11 and younger. Begins June 1 and ends July 31. Upon Registration, children will recieve a Summer Reading log to keep track of time read, or when they are read to, so they can earn fantastic prizes!

Banned Book Week Success with Harry Potter Programs

We decided on one series of books to celebrate Banned Book Week - Harry Potter! Harry Potter Programs were held October 8 - 12 and were a huge success!
Monday we made edible wands out of pretzels. We used icing and candy to decorate our wands. Around 30 children attended the program.
Tuesday we made brooms out of pencils. Around 40 children attended the program.
Wednesday we made edible spiders! We used cookies, icing, and candy and around 30 children attended.
Thursday we made edible wizard hats out of cookies, ice cream cones, icing, and candy. We had around 50 children attend this program.
Friday we held Potion Class. We made slime and had cauldron punch for the 40 children attending.
How to make Slime-
1 cup water and add 1 Tbs Borax (found in the laundry section) to make Rock Juice
Mix 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup glue - add a drop of food coloring
I put the water and glue mixture in a baggie and then added about 2 Tablespoons of the Rock Juice. Close the bag and knead the bag. DO NOT EAT! Keep in the refrigerator.

Tuesday, September 11, from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Wondering what to do with all of those shells you picked up at the beach this summer? We'll show you how to create your very own shell pet. (Bring your own shells or help yourself to those provided.)

Get a Clue @ Your LIbrary's Grand Prize Winner for the West Ashley Branch was 2 and a half year old Sophia Kozlik! She won a Fisher Price Digital Camera, a stuffed dog, and everything else in the display case. The Winner of a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows was Isabella Slotin!
iREAD's Grand Prize Winner for the West Ashley Branch was Skylair McClain. SHe won a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows and a gift certificate to Normandy Frams for lunch for Two.
